1887 was a very different time than what we all know now.

To be a nurse during that era was tantamount to being a committed nun in a convent due to how strict their lives were. These people did all the hard work, but the doctors got all the recognition and prestige. There is no doubt about it - they were all heroes in every sense of the word. They cared and catered to the needs of their patients with kindness and compassion, which are essential to the recovery process, and yet they didn’t amass any great wealth while doing their duty.

Their lives were very restricted and regimented, but they stuck with it and plowed on for the benefit of all and sundry. The rules they were saddled with were tough but they all kept them diligently without complaining. You won’t believe some of these rules the nurses of the 19th century were bound to follow.
