With its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Shop 'n Save Supermarkets is a grocery store chain with 76 locally owned and operated stores in Mid-Atlantic. The supermarket was established to provide popular brands at discounted prices. Shop 'n Save primarily operated as a "hybrid" of a full-service supermarket. Like a full-service store, it had a large square footprint and offered a deli, butcher, large liquor selection, and pharmacy. Being a discount grocery store, it had much more basic furnishings, sold many private-label goods, and required customers to bag their purchases.
Offering name-brand products and private-label goods, Shop 'n Save opened its doors in 1968, making it one of the first discount grocery stores in the United States. The store expanded to Belleville and Illinois in 1979. The chain had 33 locations in Greater St. Louis and 3 more in Springfield, Illinois. However, Ted Wetterau bought the chain in 1982. Shop 'n Save has been a division of SuperValu since SuperValu purchased Wetterau Inc. in 1992.
