Reputed for being a top food and supply chain, Smart & Final is among the oldest food retailers in the United States, with its headquarters in Commerce, California. In each store, Smart & Final has refined the warehouse shopping experience in a quicker, smaller grocery store format. Serving several communities in California, Smart & Final offers an extensive selection of quality, value-priced goods, more than 3,000 club-sized items, farm-fresh produce, dairy, deli, meat, and seafood, as well as grocery and household supplies.
Smart & Final was founded in 1971, the year three business partners named Herman Hellman, Jacob Haas, and Bernard Cohn decided to start a new grocery store in a rural area of Los Angeles. Formerly known as Hellman-Haas Grocery Co., Smart & Final started in a two-story brick building on Los Angeles street. It sold items including flour, salt, brown sugar, rope, medicine, chewing tobacco, gunpowder, and other essentials. The company changed to Haas, Baruch & Co. in 1889. It continued to grow as a grocery retailer until it was merged into the current Smart & Final grocery chain.
