Baker’s is a supermarket chain operating in the metro area of Omaha, Nebraska. The company offers food and drug products. Baker’s offers low prices on groceries and a convenient shopping experience.
In 1927, Abraham Baker founded the first Baker’s supermarket in Walnut, Iowa. His first store in the Omaha metropolitan region opened in Bellevue, Nebraska, in 1947, and his first in Omaha itself debuted in 1957 at 73rd and Maple Streets. Jack and Bob, Abraham's two sons, were given increased managerial responsibilities in 1971. The Jewel Companies, Inc. and Baker's struck a contract in 1972 to establish a Turn Style/Family Baker's Center in Omaha. The Baker family sold the chain to food wholesaler Fleming Companies, Inc. in 1992 as revenues started to fall. In 2001, Fleming sold the Baker's stores to The Kroger Company when Fleming experienced financial difficulties. After Albertsons departed from the Omaha area in 2004, three former Albertsons supermarkets were acquired and converted into Baker's locations.
