GameStop can trace its history back to 1984 to Babbage’s which is a software retailer located in Dallas, Texas. The company grew and the GameStop brand was launched in 1999 with 30 stores. Going through some struggles in the 2010s after the shift of video games to online shopping, GameStop continued to press on and, in 2021, a short squeeze was orchestrated by internet forums offering tons of media attention.

In September 2022, GameStop announced that it was partnering with FTX US with the intention of creating more customer activity. The coordination of the two is meant to introduce more GameStop customers to FTX’s community and marketplace. Collaboration will provide new ecommerce and online marketing initiatives, as well as carrying FTX gift cards in certain stores.
