Kmart - Store

Kmart is an American retail chain of discount department stores that operates three stores in the United States, associated with the Kmart chain of stores in Australia. Headquartered in Illinois, Kmart sells an array of items to meet the needs of the family, including clothing, toys, tools, shoes, hardware, auto, home goods, health & beauty, garden and more. Kmart is co-owned by the same parent company as another American iconic retail company, Sears.

Kmart - History

Kmart can trace its history back to 1897 when S.S. Kresge invested in a five-and-dime store in Memphis, Tennessee. Quickly adding a second store in Detroit and then others, the company emerged with the name “Kmart” in 1962, originally a food shop but adding more general merchandise later. At its peak in the 1990s, there were more than 2000 Kmart stores all throughout the United States.

Kmart - Promotions

With weekly ads, promotional deals and coupons, Kmart customers can save on their already low prices. Kmart also has an app that helps shoppers manage their sales, promotions, special offers and digital coupons. Customers who sign up to receive promotional emails from Kmart may be offered a coupon for a $5 discount off of $50 or more.

In a continued sad decline, the Kmart company has been closing more stores in 2022. By late spring, after shuttering four more stores, the number of Kmart stores in the US totals just three. These are located in New Jersey, New York and Florida. The company does continue to service customers online all over the United States.

Kmart partners with St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital to help kids with cancer. Creating opportunities to supply items kids needs, Kmart receives donations on behalf of the hospital. Gifts include paying for items such as meals for kids’ families, toys, and many others. Since 2006, Kmart has helped raise more than $120 million for the kids of St. Jude.
