IKEA - Store
IKEA is a multinational conglomerate chain of retails stores based in the Netherlands and offering Swedish-style and a broader Scandinavian-style range of products for the home and lifestyle in its enormous, big-box stores. The company has a particular focus on saving energy and shipping costs, with its special feature of breaking items down into the smallest possible box to lower energy and shipping costs. IKEA now operates more than 470 stores in 64 markets all over the world.
IKEA - History
The IKEA company history can trace its beginnings back to 1943 when Ingvar Kamprad began a mail-order sales business. The first store was opened later, in 1958, and the company very quickly went international when it grew into Norway, Denmark and other parts of Europe over the next decades. Growing to other parts of the world in the 1970s and 1980s, like Asia and the United States, the company eventually became the world’s furniture retailer in 2008. The US is one of IKEA’s largest markets with more than 50 stores.
IKEA - Promotions
IKEA offers promotions and special products that change regularly in store and online, often based on location. In addition, members of the IKEA Family, a free membership, can save extra on certain products and get other exclusive benefits. IKEA also offers services such as help with home design, virtual showrooms online, shipping, delivery, the IKEA App and more.
IKEA - News
In 2022, a new, smaller-size concept store was opened inside Kings Mall, Livat Hammersmith, London, UK. Because of restrictions the UK has placed on large retail establishments opening outside of city centers, IKEA is looking for new ways to respond. With no in-store warehouse, customers will not be able to buy furniture in-store and take it home the same day. Although some smaller sized city center stores in other locations have not worked well, there is hope that this new IKEA, at only 50,000 square feet, will meet the needs of local customers.
