Grocery Outlet - History
On June 11, 1946, James Read opened a grocery store named ”Cannery Sales” in San Francisco, California where he purchased government surplus food items and sold them in previously empty stores. However, the name changed to Canned Foods in 1970 when the Globe of California bought the brand. While Canned Foods focused on selling reduced, factory-second, and closeout items, it didn't open a store under its name until 1973, when it opened its first independently owned store in Redmond, Oregon. James Read, the founder, passed away in 1982, and his sons Steven and Peter assumed control of the business. Grocery Outlet became the name of the business in 1987.
