The first Fred Meyer store in Portland launched in 1922 at SW 5th & Yamhill. To increase brand engagement, the store brought together many businesses that sold cheese, meat, fruit, and other goods. In 1931, the Hollywood District of Portland saw the opening of the first suburban one-stop shopping center. In the 1960s, Fred Meyer entered the Seattle market by acquiring Seattle-based Marketime Drugs. The store expanded to California with a store in Chico in the 1990s. The stores continue to be called Fred Meyer even after the firm merged with Kroger in 1998.
