Former Kroger employee, Michael J. Cullen started King Kullen with the idea for the modern supermarket. He aimed to create a new grocery shop emphasizing cheap prices, cash transactions, and no delivery service. On August 4, 1930, the "King Kullen" store officially opened. King Kullen had 15 outlets after only 6 years of operation. King Kullen operated 30 outlets by 1952. Currently, the store is still managed by the Cullen family.
