In 1921, for friends from the Navy opened an auto supply store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, each chipping in $200. Originally called Pep Auto Supply, the name was emerged as Pep Boys a few years later. Expanding in the 1930s and 1940s, the company found booming growth as automobile ownership continued to rise. By 1969, the number of stores tripled to 124 and during the 1970s, all of the Pep Boys stores were converted to self-serviced merchandising systems, eventually moving toward supercenters in the 1980s.
