Pottery Barn got its start in 1949 when Paul Secon and Morris Secon opened the company with the desire to offer quality furniture for the home, with its first store located in West Chelsea, Manhattan. After its stores were sold to Williams Sonoma in 1986, the company began to grow in number of stores, eventually becoming international. The first mail-order catalog for the company was published in 1987; Pottery Barn Kids brand started in 1999; and the Pottery Barn Teen arm was launched in 2003.
