Located in Ventura, California, Patagonia is an American retail store that manufactures and sells outdoor gear, clothing, and equipment. Globally, Patagonia runs more than ten retail locations and sixteen manufacturing facilities. The retail store offers outdoor equipment for climbing, surfing, skiing and snowboarding, fly fishing, and trail running.
A skilled rock climber, Yvon Chouinard launched his business Chouinard Equipment in 1957 and started selling hand-forged mountain climbing equipment. Up until 1965, he sold his equipment alone. Then, in an effort to enhance his goods and deal with the escalating supply and demand problems he was experiencing, he teamed up with Tom Frost. Patagonia's first shop, Great Pacific Iron Works, debuted in 1973. Great Pacific Iron Works incorporated Patagonia and Chouinard Equipment in 1981. Patagonia included sports clothing into its product line in the latter years.

While it's been months, Patagonia continues to make headlines following the decision of its founder to donate the business to support environmental causes. Yvon Chouinard, the creator of Patagonia, a supplier of outdoor apparel and equipment, took a risky and unusual step in the business world in September. Yvon Chouinard donated all of his company's non-voting stock, or 98% of the total shares, to a non-profit group battling the climate problem. Accordingly, the non-profit will get an estimated $100 million annually to support and fund environmental activities.
Since its establishment, Patagonia has supported environmental causes through donations. Through One Percent for the Planet, a group Yvon Chouinard helped create, Patagonia has donated 1% of its overall sales to environmental organizations since 1985. In addition, the retail store offers solid support to environmental organizations.
