World Market - History
World Market got its start with its first store in San Francisco on Fisherman’s Wharf in 1958. Originally called Cost Plus World Market, the name of the store came from the idea that the prices were at cost, plus 10%, but the company dropped the “Cost Plus” part of the name in the 1990s. The company got its start selling wicker furniture and moved on to other imports. Adding more stores, the company grew to more than 250 stores in 39 states plus the District of Columbia.
