Big Y is a family-owned American chain of supermarkets headquartered in Massachusetts, started by brothers and now run by cousins. Big Y offers customers the groceries and other merchandise they need for their families, including fresh produce, meats, baked goods, seafood, pantry items, health & beauty and so much more.
Big Y - History
Starting out in 1936, Big Y was founded by brothers Paul and Gerry D’Amour in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The company began as the Y Cash Market which eventually grew into a second and larger store. By 1960, a huge 31,000 square foot supermarket was opened, and the name had been changed to Big Y. Today, there are 72 Big Y supermarkets serving Massachusetts and Connecticut, making it one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England.
Big Y - Promotions
The Big Y Membership allows customers to get discounts on hundreds of items every week. Weekly advertisements can be accessed through ad flyers or online, using the myBigY digital account that can be used to save directly from a smartphone. Big Y customers can also save at the pump with the myRewards Fuel program.

In support of raising awareness and donations to beat breast cancer, in October 2022 Big Y held its campaign where they “turned pink”. Big Y participated by allowing customers to buy pink ribbons for $1 with donations going to Partners of Hope. The company has committed to raising funds for 31 different local partners in Massachusetts and Connecticut who are engaging in the fight against breast cancer.

Working toward a more sustainable future, Big Y is committed to making green improvements. Actions include saving CO2 emissions and energy in stores, recycling over a billion bottles and cans each year, protecting landfills by recycling thousands of tons of cardboard, and using energy efficient hand dryers to replace paper towels. Plus, Big Y uses solar power and provides EV charging stations at many locations as well.
