In the 1960s, Ernie Talley founded the rent-to-own industry in Wichita, Kansas, by attracting clients of Mr. T's Rental. Former Mr. T's Rental employee Thomas Devlin saw the potential in renting name-brand goods, so he teamed up with W. Frank Barton to launch the Rent-A-Center company in Wichita, Kansas, in 1973. By purchasing five outlets in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, Rent-A-Center started doing business in Canada in March 2004. In 2016, Rent-A-Center started lease-to-own kiosks within third-party retail locations across the country under the name acceptance is brand.
