The supermarket has a reputation for selling high-quality foods at reasonable costs. Market Basket was founded by Athanasios and Efrosini Demoulas who started a small store in "The Acre," an ethnically diversified neighborhood in Lowell. DeMoulas Supermarket grocery store's specialty products included lamb, pig, and sausage. Telemachus and George, who later became the owner of the company converted it into a grocery store. The two brothers opened a second store in New Salem, New Hampshire, and named it Market Basket. Towards the end of August 2022, Market Basket had 87 locations spread throughout four states, including 51 in Massachusetts, 32 in New Hampshire, two in Maine, and two in Rhode Island.
