Walgreens is an American retail company operating one of the largest pharmacy chains in the United States. With more than 8800 locations throughout all fifty of the United States, Walgreens is an accessible shop offering not only prescription medicine services, but also over the counter medicines, health & beauty products, pantry items and more. It also offers services such as photo processing and health information. Some Walgreens stores also offer urgent care facilities and express clinics.
Walgreens - History
One of the oldest still-functioning companies in the United States, Walgreens got its start in 1901 when a small food front store was opened in Chicago, Illinois. Growing quickly, the chain had 20 stores by 1919 and the increases continued. With diversified interests in ice cream and malted milkshakes, Walgreens was known for its lunch counters in the 1940s and 1950s. Changing with the times, the lunch counters and restaurants were closed, and Walgreens became more focused on pharmacy and mercantile shops.

The ads can be found online or in the newspaper flyer, as well as through the Walgreens App for smartphones. Customers who join the myWalgreens membership can save even more and shop more easily. With their community impact program, Walgreens aims to have a healthy presence in the neighborhood. In 2022, Walgreens participated in the Black Women’s Expo in Chicago, Illinois, where entrepreneurs can network with over 25,000 attendees. Walgreens co-sponsored the event and offered services like complimentary makeup application from a beauty bar, as well as pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns on hand to offer eye screenings, blood pressure tests, flu shots, vaccinations and more.

Though Walgreens were once connected to local grocery stores, this model has changed over the years. By 2009, freestanding corner stores were the target, aiming for the street with the most traffic flow. Essentially, the idea was to promote a modern version of what would have been the old time “corner drug store”.
