Walgreens is an American retail company operating one of the largest pharmacy chains in the United States. One of the oldest still-functioning companies in the United States, Walgreens got its start in 1901 when a small food front store was opened in Chicago, Illinois. Growing quickly, the chain had 20 stores by 1919 and the increases continued. With diversified interests in ice cream and malted milkshakes, Walgreens was known for its lunch counters in the 1940s and 1950s. Changing with the times, the lunch counters and restaurants were closed, and Walgreens became more focused on pharmacy and mercantile shops.

By 2009, freestanding corner stores were the target, aiming for the street with the most traffic flow.
