Starting out as a chain of warehouse grocery stores, Food Less originated in Compton, California. The name was conceived by Lou Falley in 1930 and has gone through different iterations since that time. The no-frills format of Food 4 Less offered its customers a chance to save money. After some mergers, the Food 4 Less stores were taken over by Kroger which changed the format to something more like a full-service supermarket store.
