Ruler Foods is an American retail chain of discount warehouse supermarkets, owned by Kroger and headquartered in Seymour, Indiana. Ruler Foods is a complete grocery store that sells produce, grocery and home goods from the family of quality Kroger brands. The company has at least 50 stores in five Midwestern states, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and others. Ruler Foods are typically much smaller than a usual Kroger and only carrying groceries without fuel centers or pharmacy, and has a feel more like Aldi, where customers bag their own groceries and ‘rent’ grocery carts for a quarter.
Ruler Foods got its start in 1998 when there were three Ruler Foods store locations. Since its purchase by Kroger, Ruler Foods has continued to grow over the years. Often in places where Kroger does not have their own stores, Ruler Foods are typically small and meet the needs of rural or smaller town customers.
Ruler Foods offers their customers a chance to save with weekly advertisements. Discounts on produce, mats, pantry items and more. With 5/$5 deals, dollars off and percentages off, Ruler Foods customers can save big. In addition, Ruler Foods has an app that allows customers to view their weekly ad right on their smartphone to make shopping even more convenient.
The Riverfront Times is a news website for those living in the St. Louis area. In 2022, for the second year in a row, Riverfront Times chose Ruler Foods as their staff pick for Best Grocery Store. Citing its cleaner, neater, more organized appearance, the attraction is to the simplicity of the layout, the smallness of the stores and the less expensive items.
Although it is owned by Kroger, Ruler Foods does not look or feel like a Kroger. It is much smaller and actually has more of an Aldi or Lidl feel. The prices are lower, the shelving is simple and the target audience is the value-minded customers. It’s a great alternative for those looking for an easier and quicker experience while still accessing the Kroger brands they love.
