Getting its start in 1954, Lowes Foods began as a single grocery store in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The original owner was Jim Lowe, who was the former co-owner of Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores. Lowes Foods began growing steadily and eventually grew into South Carolina, and Virgina. By 2013, Lowes Foods began breaking the mold of traditional supermarkets and aimed to create a distinctive grocery shopping experience with new concepts.

Early in 2022, Lowes Foods launched its new concept store in Huntersville, NC. With the expected coffee and beer, what’s unexpected about the store is that it has given up its traditional checkout lines. Instead, the store has opted for self-checkout lanes, or scanners so people can scan their items as they go through the store. Lowes describes the store as part grocery store, part food hall and part community hub.

Its Gather Round the Table events are built around a table that was made from wood reclaimed from a local barn.
