When the Dollar Tree concept started in 1986, the store was named “Only $1.00” and there were five stores in Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee. As the store idea grew, the name of the company was change to Dollar Tree in 1993. Through some acquisitions, the company continued to grow and by 2006, the company had acquired its 2000th store. Today, there are more than 16,000 stores in 48 US states and five Canadian provinces.

Plus, the addition of the Dollar Tree Plus concept stores created options to have higher end items, such as $3 or $5 price points, putting the store in more direction competition with stores like Five Below.
