Randy Repass established the business in Sunnyvale, California, under the name West Coast Ropes in 1968 and began selling nylon rope out of his garage. In 1977, the business changed its name to West Marine Products, Inc. after acquiring the assets of West Products. West Marine created the Port Supply wholesale segment in 1978. In Miami and Annapolis, Maryland, on the East Coast of the United States, the first West Marine stores debuted in 1991. The business went public on the NASDAQ exchange in 1993. West Marine's VP Chuck Hawley launched westmarine.com in 1996 with help from a group under the direction of Webmaster & Catalog Systems Analyst Robert Kennedy. It swiftly rose to the top of early online shops. In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the business inaugurated their 50,000 square foot largest retail location in November 2011
